Frank Lloyd Wright’s Rose Pauson House - Phoenix, AZ
Tue, 20 Jan 2026 00:19:13 The first photo is likely from shortly after it was built in 1940. The house burned down in 1942 after one of the drapes caught fire from either drifting into the fireplace or from an ember. The stone walls in picture two are from between 1942 and 1979. The city was extending 32nd St to reach Lincoln Dr around then, clearing what had become locally known as Shiprock. It was a popular hangout spot for local teens from the 50s until it was cleared. The chimney was saved and moved south along 32nd St to stand at the entrance of its neighborhood in 1979. It stood there until 2012 when it would partially collapse. The remnants are still standing at the front of the neighborhood. submitted by /u/Jeenowa [link] [comments]

Trindade Island, Brazil (1994/2024)
Sun, 18 Jan 2026 22:22:13 Ilha de Trindade, one of Brazil’s most remote island, located about 1,200 km off the coast of Espírito Santo, experienced severe environmental degradation beginning in the 18th century. The damage started after goats were introduced around 1700 by the renowned scientist Edmond Halley, best known for discovering Halley’s Comet. Intended as a temporary food supply, the animals were left behind and reproduced rapidly, becoming invasive and destroying much of the island’s native vegetation. Other animals, such as pigs, sheep, and chickens, were later introduced, worsening the impact, along with human activity by 19th-century settlers. After decades of research, debate, and coordinated action, a long eradication program was carried out, and the last goats were fully removed in 2005. Since then, the island has undergone a dramatic ecological recovery, with forest cover increasing by 1,468% over the past 30 years, the return of native plant species, and the resurgence of bird populations, making Trindade a successful example of environmental restoration. submitted by /u/luiz_marques [link] [comments]
